What’s Your Pace?

My mom said for years that my dad had only one pace. You couldn’t speed him up, no matter where you needed to go, when you needed to be there, or how urgent you thought the situation was.

Do you know someone like that? Maybe you see that person in the mirror.

Or perhaps you’re at the other end of the spectrum. You push, push, push. “Let’s go!” is your natural response—even when the situation doesn’t actually require a sprint.

We’ve all heard the story of the tortoise and the hare. It’s tempting to conclude that slow and steady always wins. But I’m not convinced that’s the complete lesson.

There are times when urgency matters. We need to move quickly, make a decision, and act. Other times call for patience, preparation, and the steady effort required for a marathon rather than a sprint.

Neither approach wins every race.

The real challenge is recognizing what the moment requires and choosing our pace accordingly. That adjustment can make a difference for our teams, our families, and our own well-being.

We’re all running different kinds of races. The pace that served us yesterday may not be the pace we need today.

Where are you rushing when you should slow down—or moving too slowly when it’s time to act?

Your coach’s insight…simply put.
